    The University of Pretoria has once again achieved a 100% pass rate in the January 2024 The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) Initial Test of Competence (ITC).Four of UP’s candidates made it into the top 5, with the top performing candidate nationally being a UP alumni. This is the second year in a row that a UP candidate has come out tops nationally. This is a resounding success for the institution. Our 100% pass rate once again affirms the quality of our teaching and learning and demonstrates that UP continues to be a leader in the training of chartered accountants. UP is ranked first in South Africa for the Accounting and Finance subject areas in the 2023 QS Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings by Subject.Congratulations to all the UP candidates who sat in these exams. We are proud to see UP Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences alumni making their mark in service of the country once they graduate with world-class qualifications from UP.     The African Public Policy Network (African-PPN) is excited to inaugurate its initiatives with a workshop titled “Policy Scholars in the City”, co-hosted by the UP Public Policy Hub (PPH) and the School of Public Management and Administration (SPMA) in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria.African-PPN serves as an international platform for collaboration in research and teaching among African public policy scholars within Africa and across the globe. It aims to globalise African public policy studies and scholars, operating under the umbrella of the International Public Policy Association as both a regional network and an organised section.Through partnerships with the SPMA and the PPH, African-PPN aims to strengthen emerging initiatives that directly or indirectly support African governments in their pursuits towards achieving emergent and strategic plan objectives.This workshop aims to serve as a platform to foster meaningful dialogue and collaboration among scholars and policymakers.     As we celebrate International Women's Day today, we congratulate Prof Nara F. M. on her appointment as the new Chair in Municipal Finance at the University of Pretoria's African Tax Institute, effective from 1 March 2024. Prof Monkam is currently an Associate Professor of Public Economics in the Department of Economics and Head of the Public Policy Hub at the University of Pretoria.The Chair in Municipal Finance is dedicated to confronting the challenges encountered by African cities and smaller municipalities head-on. With a focus on property taxation, land-based financing tools, expenditure needs, and urban planning, it aims to address these challenges effectively.It is envisioned to have a substantial impact in three main areas: research and research collaboration, teaching and learning, and community engagement. "Tax morality hinges on whether taxes are used, in our case, to pay for a transformed, inclusive future. This raises a sticky question: what is a moral taxpayer to do when taxes cease to serve the common good and are diverted towards elite interests?
