The most common size for ice fishing holes is 6 inches, and it's a good size for many types of fish. A 6-inch hole is suitable for catching panfish as well as medium-sized fish trout and eater walleyes. One of the benefits of a 6-inch hole is that the fish is less likely to swim back down the hole and escape.

Most anglers will start in the ice-fishing game without spending a lot of money on ice augers. An ice chisel or “spud bar” is the cheapest tool that can be used to make holes in the ice. In addition, spud bars are the best tool for checking ice thickness.

However, there are some downsides to using a hand-powered ice auger. They can be more difficult to use than electric augers, especially if you're drilling through thick ice. They also require more physical effort to use, so they can be tiring if you're drilling multiple holes.
